About CIDD

An interdisciplinary research center of the University of Oradea, dedicated to democratic innovation and the digitalization of political and communication processes.

The Center for Democratic Innovation and Digitalization (CIDD) is an interdisciplinary research hub of the University of Oradea, focused on understanding and improving democratic governance in the context of digital transformation.

Who we are

CIDD is a research unit of the University of Oradea, integrated into the Department of Political Science and Communication Sciences of the Faculty of History, International Relations, Political Sciences and Communication Sciences. The center was accredited by internal certificate no. 483/16.01.2025 and operates for an indefinite period.

We study the impact of digital technologies on democratic governance, on the relationship between citizens and institutions and on how people engage in public life. We analyse both the risks of digitalization – disinformation, information manipulation, the erosion of trust in institutions – and its opportunities: greater participation, transparency and better public services.

Mission

CIDD’s mission is to promote the accountability, responsiveness, transparency and legitimacy of democratic governance through the innovative use of digital technologies. The center aims to become a pole of research excellence, supporting interdisciplinary work, lifelong learning and dialogue with academic, socio-economic and political actors.

Objectives

  • developing research on democratic innovation and the digitalization of political processes and public communication;
  • training and developing human resources dedicated to innovation and digitalization;
  • promoting research results nationally and internationally;
  • supporting Romania’s integration into the European Union’s Digital Decade;
  • disseminating knowledge and building research networks.

Supporting doctoral research

CIDD plays an essential training role: it supports the University of Oradea’s Doctoral School in Political Science through the expertise of its members – three of whom are doctoral supervisors – and by facilitating doctoral students’ access to research infrastructure, including the e-Journalism Laboratory and, in the future, the Political Analysis Laboratory.

Structure and governance

The center is led by a director and a Management Council made up of the director, the scientific secretary and the two heads of research groups. Its work is organised in research groups with full members and associate members – doctoral and master’s students and external researchers.
